Jungle Vibes with Plant Stylist Hilton Carter

For Hilton Carter, becoming a plant stylist wasn’t necessarily a planned career path, but when the opportunity presented itself, he decided to pursue it. The Baltimore-based creative has been collecting plants since 2011 in his lush, expertly styled loft Hilton shares with his wife Fiona. With over 280 plants and growing he is for sure a plant lover.  But like all plant lovers, his journey started small with an empty apartment and one fiddle-leaf fig tree. Over the past year, my love for plants has grown tremendously and I find myself on Youtube learning more and more about them every day. From Planterina, Crazy Plant Guy, and Hilton Carter they have taken over my life.

Hilton tells ESSENCE Magazine
“Caring for plants provides the moments to think about how to treat people,” he says. “It’s one of the few times I find myself pulled away from the screen. I get into my zen watering, checking the soil, looking at the leaves, making sure they’re okay. The process makes me more self-aware.”

Houseplants are good for your health and not just for their visual beauty. Why? They essentially do the opposite of what we do when we breathe: release oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide. This not only freshens up the air but also eliminates harmful toxins. Extensive research by NASA has revealed that houseplants can remove up to 87 percent of air toxins in 24 hours. Studies have also proven that indoor plants reduce stress levels and boost your mood.

Plants have truly made me feel alive and I will surely be on this journey forever. Wild at Home is Hilton's first book on plant styling and care and it covers everything from how to pick the best plant for your space, to how to pot it once you do. Through the book, you'll learn all the best methods on how to create and maintain your own indoor jungle.
