The 2014 Essence Black Women In Hollywood Luncheon was a few days ago but I'm still gushing over the fabulous fashions. Stars like Lupita Nyong'O, Tracee Ellis Ross, Oprah Winfrey, Kerry Washington and so many more were all celebrated for their hard work in film this year. The honorees were Cheryl Boone Isaacs, president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences; Academy Award-nominated actress Lupita Nyong’o of “12 Years a Slave”; Sundance Film Festival winner Ava DuVernay for directing “Middle of Nowhere”.
Lupita Nyong’O spoke of a time she felt “unbeautiful,” saying, “I got teased and taunted about my night-shaded skin. And my one prayer to God, the miracle worker, was that I would wake up lighter-skinned … and every day I experienced the same disappointment of being just as dark as I was the day before.”
Nyong’o said her self-image didn’t change until the world embraced supermodel Alek Wek. “Even Oprah called her beautiful and that made it a fact.”
Lupita now is an Oscar Award Winner and I couldn't be even more proud of her. She is so gorgeous and carries herself with such grace and class. It warmed my heart when her name got called for the Oscar. Thank you Lupita for opening another door for Women of Color in Hollywood. I salute you for killing the red carpet and staying true to your roots.
