Issa Rae the beautiful writer-actor-producer is opening up about her childhood, the stresses of being a boss, and her growing business empire in May's issue of Rolling Stone.
Jo-Issa Rae Diop was born to a Senegalese father and Louisiana-native mother who met while they were students in France. The Diops raised five children together and Rae landed right in the middle. Her family moved around from Los Angeles to Senegal to Potomac, Maryland.
It’s the essence of her “awkward” persona, the in-between-ness of not feeling as definable as the people around you want to be. Issa has truly made us awkward black girls feel like magic.
The multi-talented writer and producer estimates she has about 22 movies and shows in development 16 of which are for HBO and HBO Max — through a five-year deal with parent company, WarnerMedia. The 36-year-old is preparing the fifth and final season of her hit HBO series, Insecure, but she has way more to offer the entertainment world. “I want to be among the greats,” says Issa to Rolling Stone. She truly will be and she's just getting started. The new season of Insecure can't come quick enough.
